Gluten-free not always the answer for many

We’ve seen the sugar-free and fat-free labels for years. Now there are gluten-free options at the grocery store and on the menu at many restaurants.

Subway has even joined in the trend. Portland is a test market for their gluten-free sandwich rolls.

In Southeast Portland Rudy Medina makes gluten-free pizza.

“It has really helped our business. Some people are doing it as a diet fad,” said Medina.

One marketing group reports sales of gluten-free products are up 37 percent for the first part of 2012.

Deborah Coddington: The market’s to blame for obesity? Fat chance

It’s official: we’re a nation of idiots who can’t make decisions to save ourselves or take responsibility for our problems.

That’s according to two academics from Otago University, researchers in public health, Dr Gabrielle Jenkin and Penny Field, who specialise in the obesity epidemic.

Interviewed this week by Kathryn Ryan on National Radio, Field tossed off a comment which sent me into deep despair. Obesity, she said, was “not a problem with individual choice and self-discipline, which we’ve proved successfully doesn’t work”.

Instead it’s the fault of “big institutions and the market”.

Don’t suffer a college hangover

Last week we started the first in a series of articles where we will look at the journey our body goes through as we age and the corresponding changes we experience hormonally and physiologically.

This week, we move from the pre-pubescent years to the late teens and our transition from secondary school to college.

Sixth year is a time when some schools focus on Senior Cup rugby, while for others it’s the soccer or hockey cups. Schools rugby is very competitive and it brings great exposure to those who are crowned champions.

Dangers of Working from Home

Just yesterday, a few friends of mine got to talking about working from home. Some companies have started to open up to the idea of letting people work from home. For companies this can actually be a good thing. They save up on overhead. They save up on space. But there can be dangers.

Distractions. Ive tried the whole work from home thing. And while you can contemplate on hacking away at work comfortable in your pajamas, home can provide a whole lot of distractions that you dont have at work. The TV. The chores. The pet.
