Sport as a natural high blood pressure blocker

Berlin – High blood pressure is a significant factor in cardiovascular disease such as stroke or heart attack.

Sport can reduce the risk because, along with a healthy diet and moderate alcohol consumption, non-drug therapy includes vigorous physical activity, according to Sven Fikenzer from the German Highschool of Health Management in Saarbrucken. “Between 30 and 60 minutes of sporting activity a day can be very effective.”

“A medical study here in Germany has shown that a quarter of all Germans between 20- and 30-years-old are affected by high blood pressure. In many cases they are not even aware of this,” says Fikenzer. Read more…


USAID’s Bolivia Mission Gets a New Director

WASHINGTON, DC - Wayne R. Nilsestuen has been sworn in as the Director for U.S. Agency for International Development’s Mission in Bolivia. He brings over 30 years of development experience, having worked in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition to his service to USAID, Mr. Nilsestuen was a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in Sierra Leone, West Africa where he started a vocational agricultural program at a secondary school for boys.

Mr. Nilsestuen’s most recent post was as the Mission Director in Guatemala from July of 2006 to August of 2010. Prior to Guatemala, he served as USAID Mission Director in Paraguay and Deputy Mission Director in Honduras and Bolivia.

Winter Sports Tourists at Higher Risk of Heart Attack

Skiers and other winter sports tourists who visit the Alps are at increased risk for heart attack due to low temperatures, high altitude and inadequate conditioning for intense physical exertion, finds a new study.

The risk is greatest during the first two days of vacation, said a research team of cardiologists at the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, who focused on winter tourists in the Tyrolean Alps.

Afghan Sentenced to Prison for Committing Fraud Against USAID

Washington, DC - Ahman Samim Sediqi of Kabul, Afghanistan, was tried and sentenced in a local Afghan court on forgery and embezzlement charges stemming from his work on a development project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announced USAID Office of Inspector General spokeswoman Dona M. Dinkler.

A three-judge panel found Sediqi guilty of embezzling nearly $193,000 while working as a finance coordinator on a $229 million local governance program financed by USAID and implemented by an American contractor.
