Measles at Super Bowl festivities threatens public health

The Indiana State Department of Health sent out a statement Feb. 3, two days before the New England Patriots and the New York Giants squared off for Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.  The bulletin, which advised “Hoosiers and out-of-town guests” to “Practice Good Health Defense for a Safe Super Bowl Sunday,” offered tips about healthful eating, drinking in moderation, keeping warm and storing party foods properly to avoid food-borne illnesses. Less than a week later, the department circulated another release that touched on a Super Bowl health hazard few had considered: measles, and the importance of vaccination.  State health officials reported two confirmed and two probable cases of the respiratory ailment.  One of infected individuals had attended pre-Super Bowl celebrations in downtown Indianapolis on Feb. 3 Read more…


Hospital CIO Stephen Stewart: Don’t bet your career on an ICD-10 reprieve

Stephen Stewart, CIO of Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, says his organization isn’t waiting around to see if the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services –and he urges his colleagues not to count on it, either.

Despite word today from acting CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner that CMS will “re-examine” the ICD-10 conversion timeline, taking a wait-and-see approach is too risky, he says.

Research highlights urgent need to tackle low number of organ donors from BME communities

There is an urgent need to increase the number of organ donors from black and minority ethnic (BME) groups in countries with a strong tradition of immigration, such as the UK, USA, Canada and the Netherlands, in order to tackle inequalities in access and waiting times.
