Stockholm – The Swedish centre-right government Thursday named Anders Nordstrom as ambassador for HIV/AIDS issues.

Nordstrom succeeds Lennart Hjelmaker who has held the post since 2003. Hjelmaker is due to become Swedish ambassador to Tanzania.

Among the tasks the HIV/AIDS ambassador has is to ensure that HIV/AIDS prevention efforts are integrated with international development and global heath goals.

Nordstrom recently left the post as head of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) that he held since 2008.

International Development Cooperation Minister Gunilla Carlsson cited the need to introduce a new management team at SIDA to tackle the agency’s deficits.

He has previously been interim head of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria that funds programmes in over 140 countries, and also worked at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva.
