Just yesterday, a few friends of mine got to talking about working from home. Some companies have started to open up to the idea of letting people work from home. For companies this can actually be a good thing. They save up on overhead. They save up on space. But there can be dangers.

Distractions. Ive tried the whole work from home thing. And while you can contemplate on hacking away at work comfortable in your pajamas, home can provide a whole lot of distractions that you dont have at work. The TV. The chores. The pet.

Demolition work will begin Sunday at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in Joplin, the hospital that was virtually destroyed in the May 22 twister that killed 161 people in the southwest Missouri community.

St. John’s Mercy president Gary Pulsipher says taking down the hospital is another step in the recovery process for Joplin. Implosion is not an option because of old lead mines beneath the ground. Read more…

Cellulitis is a skin infection caused by bacteria. It is not a superficial infection; it is involved with the deep dermis and subcutaneous layers of the skin. A staph infection is the most likely cause of cellulitis. This occurs on any area of the body, but the legs are the most common area.

The infected area includes redness, swelling, soreness, and skin tightness. The person may also feel feverish; they may have chills, nausea, or sweating. People with diabetes, poor skin circulation, ulcers, surgery, or poor immunity are at risk for cellulitis. Fortunately, cellulitis is not contagious since it affects the deeper layers of the skin.

Shingles are not one of life’s better experiences. The varicella-zoster virus, the same virus behind chickenpox, causes the painful skin rash. If you’ve had chickenpox, the virus can remain inactive in nerves around your brain and spinal cord and then be reactivated as shingles many decades later.

Shingles are most common in people over 50 and the risk increases with age. You’re also more vulnerable if you have a weakened immune system because of diseases such as HIV/AIDS or cancer. Taking certain medications, such as prolonged use of steroids, can also make you more vulnerable.

There is a way to prevent this painful experience.

Diabetes could affect wages, jobs for young people

The health consequences of diabetes are well known for young people, but there may be more outcomes of the disease: a worse job outlook and lower wages. The findings come from a study published in the January issue of the journal Health Affairs. Researchers, focusing on the nonmedical effects diabetes has on teens and young adults, found that overall, people with diabetes have a high school dropout rate 6% higher than those who don’t have the disease. Data on about 15,000 people were examined from four waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. The first wave included students in grade seven through 12; they were interviewed again about a year, seven years and 14 years later. Read more…
