Restricted Chimp Use In Gov’t Research Recommended

An Institute of Medicine committee has released a report recommending stringent limits on the use of chimpanzees in biomedical and behavioral lab work performed at the National Institutes of Health. The report comes amid Congressional pressure to make sure such research is completed humanely.

The IOM’s recommendations focus on the scientific need for chimpanzees as research subjects, but they also took ethical issues into consideration. Read more…

Trauma drug first for civilian ambulance service

A drug currently used to reduce bleeding in operating theatres and in trauma in the armed forces is set to be used by a civilian ambulance service for the first time.

This is thanks to collaboration between the South West Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, hospitals across the South West of England and researchers from the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry.

The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry is a joint entity of the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth and the NHS in the South West of England.

Terrible junk food diet of schoolage kids revealed

MANY youngsters are still living on a daily diet of junk food and failing to eat enough fruit and veg, a survey suggests.

Almost a third of secondary-age pupils (29pc) are tucking into sweets, crisps and chocolate three or more times a day, it warns.

And two in five (40pc) say that fizzy or energy drinks are their daily drink of choice.

The poll, commissioned by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), questioned more than 2,000 11-to-16-year-olds in the UK about their eating habits.

The findings show that on average, these youngsters eat 2.57 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, with around 25pc saying they eat one piece or less.
