Triangle hospitals fare poorly in quality study

The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area was ranked 42nd for overall hospital care among the nation’s 50 largest areas by population, according to CareChex, a division of The Delta Group, a Greenville, S.C. health care information services company.

The company based its ranking on an analysis of hospitals’ process, outcomes and patient satisfaction. Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill was ranked No. 10.

Dying at Home Often Easier on Cancer Patients, Caregivers

For people with advanced cancer, dying at home rather than the hospital results in higher quality-of-life scores at the end of life, and may be easier on the patients’ caregivers as well.

A study published online Sept. 13 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that compared to people who died in intensive care units (ICU) or other areas of a hospital, when people died at home, their loved ones were less likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder or prolonged grief disorder, marked by intense, disabling grief that goes on longer than six months.

Winter Sports Tourists at Higher Risk of Heart Attack

Skiers and other winter sports tourists who visit the Alps are at increased risk for heart attack due to low temperatures, high altitude and inadequate conditioning for intense physical exertion, finds a new study.

The risk is greatest during the first two days of vacation, said a research team of cardiologists at the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, who focused on winter tourists in the Tyrolean Alps.
