Summer Heat Holds Potential Danger for Young Athletes

SATURDAY, July 23 Eager young athletes will be taking to sports fields for practices and games this summer and they need to be protected from heat exhaustion and heat stroke, a doctor warns.

The most important way to keep them safe is “hydration, hydration, hydration,” Dr. Toni Salvatore, medical director of the Pediatric Center at Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut, said in a hospital news release.

Drinking adequate amounts of fluid before, during and after a practice or game prevents heat-related illnesses by keeping blood volumes high to support circulation, Salvatore explained.

In hot weather, athletes should double the amount of fluid they would normally consume.

Mail-order pharmacy for new statin prescriptions achieve better cholesterol control

Kaiser Permanente Northern California patients who obtained new statin prescriptions via a mail-order pharmacy achieved better cholesterol control in the first 3-15 months following the initiation of therapy — compared to those patients who only obtained their statin prescription from their local Kaiser Permanente Northern California pharmacy. Greater adjusted rates of LDL-C control in mail-order pharmacy users were seen across all gender and race-ethnicity groups, according to the study that appears in the current online issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Hawaii had four mass layoffs in June

Hawaii saw four mass layoffs during the month of June, resulting in 275 people filing for initial unemployment insurance. That’s down from five mass layoffs in May, which resulted in 351 people filing initial unemployment claims.

Last month’s total was also down from the seven mass layoffs in June 2010, which involved 562 workers filing for initial unemployment insurance, according to seasonally unadjusted data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The bureau does not identify the names of the companies involved in the layoffs.
